Comox Valley Combat Guild

The Comox Valley Combat Guild practices Historical European Martial Arts, essentially medieval fencing and combat techniques using swords and other historical weapons. They’re really into longsword, rapier and dagger, singlestick, and sabre, studying techniques from historical combat manuals written by German and Italian martial masters from the 1400s-1600s. It’s a mix of historical research and physical practice, working out how these techniques actually functioned.
Classes cover conditioning, technique, and sparring. The guild runs quarterly internal tournaments and members travel to compete in external HEMA events, several fighters are ranked on international competition lists. They’re based in Courtenay and welcome people of all ages and fitness levels. The instructors work to make historical manuscripts accessible and create what members describe as a comfortable learning environment.
Worth noting: while the historical sources they study come from medieval European elite culture, the guild actively emphasizes inclusivity and welcomes everyone. If you’ve been curious about historical swordsmanship or just think medieval combat sounds interesting, it’s open to beginners. No prior martial arts experience needed.
