Cumberland Community Forest Society

Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS) is a charitable organization that’s been protecting threatened forest lands around Cumberland for 25 years. They purchase land and place it under conservation covenants to preserve the interconnected system of forests, creeks, and wetlands spanning the Trent and Puntledge Watersheds. As of December 2023, they’ve protected 545 acres across five separate land purchases, and they’re currently working on acquiring “Middle Earth,” a 261-acre property.

Beyond land acquisition, CCFS handles ecosystem restoration, maintains trail systems on protected lands, and runs research projects focused on local wildlife including the Western Toad Project, Winter Bird Project, and Bat Project. They also offer community education through science talks, nature walks, and environmental programs. The goal is biodiversity recovery and long-term forest health, not just preservation but active stewardship and restoration of ecosystems that have been degraded or threatened by development.

Volunteer opportunities are available through their sign-up form, and the organization relies on support from individuals, businesses, and organizations across the region. If you care about preserving wild spaces near Cumberland or want to contribute to conservation work, CCFS offers ways to get involved through volunteering, donations, or participating in their programs.
