Immigrant Welcome Centre

The Immigrant Welcome Centre (officially the Multicultural & Immigrant Services Association of North Vancouver Island) has been supporting newcomers to the region since 1992. They provide free settlement services for immigrants, refugees, and people new to Canada across Campbell River, Comox Valley, and the North Island. Their Courtenay office serves clients from over 100 countries of origin, offering practical help with paperwork, employment resources, navigating the school system, and getting set up with government online services like MyCRA, BC Services Card, and Health Gateway.
One of their main programs is free LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) classes, which help people learn English in a structured, supportive environment. Beyond language training, they run social groups where people can practice English, build friendships, and connect with others who are settling into life here. They also organize community activities—skating, swimming, badminton, bilingual story time, cultural events, and field trips—designed to help newcomers get to know the area and feel at home.
The organization runs on a mix of staff and volunteers and partners with local agencies to create what they call “welcoming and inclusive communities.” If you’re new to Canada or you know someone who is, this is a key resource for settlement support. They also run the Welcoming Communities Coalition and Workplace Language and Culture Hub for broader community engagement. Check their website for office hours and contact info for the Courtenay location.
